Jude Fawley is a bright but impoverished stonemason who aspires to attend university and become a scholar. H is failure to fulfill the expectations of the two women he loves points to his final tragedy. Concerned with the destructive conventions of marriage and the English class system, Jude the Obscure is a raging indictment of Victorian society; the censure of this insightful book was almost without precedent in the history of English literature.

Against the Jews and the Gentiles

Manetti´s Latin treatise Adversus Iudaeos et Gentes (Against the Jews and Gentiles) offers a polemical defense of the Christian religion. This volume, which includes the first four books, surveys human history from the Creation to the life, teaching, and resurrection of Christ. Book I begins with the creation and fall of man in the Biblical account. There follows a long digression adversus gentes (the Gentiles, i.e., pagans), which reviews central points of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy and religion, and censures the ancients for their senseless doctrines and bloody rites. Manetti then returns to the Jews, whose beliefs and practices are praised from Abraham to Moses. During their centuries of ´´true´´ piety, Manetti calls the chosen people ´´Hebrews.´´ But from the time of the Exodus onwards, he censures them as ´´Jews´´ because they observe the absurd and cruel practices of Pentateuchal legislation, which he views as analogous to pagan rites. Manetti stresses several themes in Jewish history: the early development of the concept of righteousness, the Exodus, the Mosaic Law and its inadequacy--thus providing a ´´preparation for the Gospel´´ in Eusebius´ sense. The next three books provide a synoptic biography of Jesus in three stages. Book II describes the life of Christ up to the raising of Lazarus; Book III relates his teaching, and Book IV offers an account of Christ´s passion, death, and resurrection.--

Excerpt from Revelations of Prison Life, Vol. 1 of 2: With an Enquiry Into Prison Discipline and Secondary Punishments Here I am bound in conscience to exclude from censure the County of Middlesex, where no unwise economy, or lack of foresight, have crippled the efficiency of the prisons or lunatic asylums. Would that all counties would compare with it but still, if a new organization should be deemed a universal desideratum, as I honestly contend is the case, one board must be created to take cognizance of the entire administration. Excerpt from Reliques of Ancient English Poetry, Vol. 1 of 3: Consisting of Old Heroic Ballads, Songs, and Other Pieces of Our Earlier Poets; Together With Some Few of Later Date The sures of so many men of learning and cha re´eter the Editor hopes will serve as an amulet, to guard him from every unfavourable censure for having bestowed any attention on a parcel of Baamns. It was at the request of many of these gentlemen, and of others eminent for their genius and taste, that this little work was undertaken. To prepare it for the press has been the amusement of now and then a va cant hour amid the leisure and retirement of rural life, and bath only served as a relaxation from graver studies. It has been taken up at difi´erent times, and often thrown aside for many months, during an inter val of four or five years. This has occasioned some inconsistencies and repetitions, which the candid reader will pardon. As great care has been taken to admit nothing immoral an indecent, the Editor hopes he need not be ashamed of having bestowed some of his idle hours on the ancient literature of our own country, or in rescuing from oblivion some pieces (though but the amusements of our ancestors) which tend to place in a striking light their taste, genius, sentiments, or manners. Die Harzreise
€ 1.30 *
ggf. zzgl. Versand
